Homemade Root Beer Float with Ice Cream…in a Bag!
I saw ice cream rock salt at birch and immediately knew my kids needed to make ice cream in a bag! This simple recipe uses just a few pantry staples, a gallon bag, ice, and rock salt to create creamy homemade vanilla ice cream. Top it with soda for a classic summer treat that’s fun for kids and adults alike.
What You’ll Need
Ice Cream
1 cup half-and-half (or whole milk for a lighter version)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
For the Ice Bath
1 gallon-size zip-top bag
1 quart-size zip-top bag
4 cups ice
½ cup rock salt
For the Float
Root beer (or your favorite soda)
How to Make It
In a quart-size zip-top bag, combine the half-and-half, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Seal tightly, removing as much air as possible. For extra protection against leaks, place it inside a second quart-size bag.
Fill the gallon-size bag halfway with ice and sprinkle in the rock salt.
Place the sealed ice cream bag inside the ice bag. Seal the gallon bag tightly.
Wrap the bag in a towel and shake for 8–12 minutes, or until the mixture reaches a soft-serve consistency.
Remove the small bag, rinse and dry the outside before opening.
Scoop the homemade vanilla ice cream into a glass and slowly pour root beer over the top until it becomes frothy. Serve immediately with a spoon and a straw if desired.
