Behind Every Meal
is a Mission.
Every dollar at Birch serves a purpose. As a nonprofit rooted in service, any funds beyond our immediate needs are reinvested into our programs, our people, and the families we serve. Because we’re a financial literacy program, we also model what we teach—building a healthy emergency fund to ensure stability for the future. While program dues and agency fees sustain a portion of our work, it’s the generosity of donors that truly fuels our mission.

You can support Birch Community Services through a distribution from your retirement account. Many donors choose to give using funds from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), which can provide meaningful tax advantages.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
If you are age 70½ or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to a qualified charity such as Birch Community Services. You may donate up to the annual IRS limit (indexed for inflation) each year - in 2026 that's $111,000 per individual, so a married couple can donate $222,000!
QCDs must be made directly from your IRA to the charity.
The amount donated through a QCD is excluded from your taxable income, which may reduce your overall tax burden.
Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
Beginning at age 73, the IRS requires you to take annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from most retirement accounts.A QCD can be used to satisfy all or part of your RMD, while supporting Birch’s mission.
Because QCDs are not included in taxable income, they are often more tax-efficient than taking an RMD and then making a separate charitable donation.
Alternatively, you may take your RMD as income and donate a portion to Birch. If you itemize deductions, you may be eligible for a charitable deduction. However, this approach typically does not provide the same tax advantages as making a QCD.
