Braised Black Beans

A sweet, salty Korean side dish packed with protein and perfect for keeping in the fridge, ready to go for meals! The best part about this recipe is that you can really adjust it to your taste- easily make it less salty with low-sodium soy sauce or more savory with extra garlic. This side dish goes well with stir-fry noodles, chicken, and fried rice!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 1/3 cup of dried black beans (yields 3 cups after cooking)

  • 2 cloves of minced garlic

  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup of sugar (brown or white)

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds

How to Make It

  1. 1. Follow our recipe for cooking dried black beans! This recipe is best enjoyed with dried beans rather than canned.

    2. This can be prepared immediately following cooking the beans, or add 1/2-1 cup of water to a heavy-bottom pot with the cooked beans.

    3. Add the minced garlic, soy sauce, and vegetable oil on low heat. Stir well, cover with a lid, and simmer on low for 10 minutes.

    4. Add in the sugar, turn to medium-high heat. Stir occasionally for another 5-10 minutes until the sauce is well incorporated, covering the beans entirely, and is not overcooked.

    5. Remove from heat, add in sesame oil and sesame seeds.

    6. Enjoy!
