Simple Buttercream Frosting

This is another one of those “not really a recipe” ideas but  a way to take something we often see at Birch and make it our own. I used an already made cake (from the last cold section over by the Costco pizza in the corner), removed the original frosting, and added my own buttercream with a little food coloring. My daughter asked for an earth cake for her birthday and this was perfect. It was a way to save money while also giving her what she was looking forward to.

What You’ll Need

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1–2 Tbsp milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Food coloring (blue + green for this cake)

How To Make It

  1. Cream butter: Beat softened butter until it’s white and fluffy.

  2. Add sugar: Slowly mix in powdered sugar until combined.

  3. Add liquid: Add vanilla and 1 tbsp milk. Mix until smooth. Add more milk if needed for spreadable consistency.

  4. Color: Add some drops of food coloring or keep it white

  5. Frost cake!
